Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Karyi University of Theatre, Cinema and Television is Ukraine’s leading state university for theatre, film and television. Its history began on 1 September 1904, when the composer Mykola Lysenko opened a Music and Drama School in Kyiv; the school was named after Lysenko in 1912 and became the Lysenko Music and Drama Institute in 1918. Today the university bears the name of the Ukrainian playwright Ivan Karpenko-Karyi and has national status.
The university trains actors, theatre and film directors, cinematographers, sound directors, editors, animators, producers, film and theatre critics and puppet theatre artists. Teaching combines theory with constant practice: students create performances, short films and TV projects throughout their studies. Many well-known Ukrainian actors, directors and cameramen are graduates.
The university is located in the historic centre of Kyiv. Programmes are taught in Ukrainian.
Applicants send their education document, passport and photo to receive an invitation to study, then apply for a study visa. Admission to all programmes includes a creative competition in the chosen speciality.
